Water Mitigation & Flood Cleanup Checklist

You can’t always predict when water damage will occur, but you can always be prepared to handle it when it does. Water damage can be caused by a wide range of factors: severe weather, appliance malfunctions, plumbing issues, and more…

Whether it’s a residential home or commercial property, just one inch of water can cause $25,000 of damage. Luckily, long-term damage can be minimized simply by acting quickly and following a few key steps:

Assess the area

This is key, especially if you’ve been evacuated for a severe weather emergency, such as a hurricane or tornado. When in doubt, we recommend contacting FEMA directly to ensure it’s safe to return to your home or business.

If you are on-site while the incident occurs, make sure you evaluate the affected area for any immediate threats before assessing the damage further. Threats could include live electrical lines, loose/sharp materials, and rushing water. Remember: although the location may “look” safe, do not continue your assessment until you

Turn off all power sources

Water and electricity do not mix. Switch off all electrical breakers and power sources to eliminate the risk of electrocution. If you do not have access to your building’s power sources, contact the appropriate resources before moving forward.

Determine the source of water

Is it weather-related? Where is the water coming from? Is it still flowing?

If the water is coming from a plumbing source, turn off the water main to prevent further damage. If you’re in a commercial building and do not have access to the water source, contact the building manager if they are already not aware of the problem.

Schedule a Water Mitigation Service

Contact a technician to assess the location as soon as possible. This will limit excessive water damage and jumpstart the cleanup process. Traditional drying and cleanup methods are insufficient in these scenarios.

These technicians use professional-grade industrial extractors, floor drying systems, air movers & high-quality blowers that residential and commercial properties do not have access to.

File a report with your insurance company

Contact your insurance company within 24-48 hours to file a report – if you wait too long to complete this step, your claim may be denied. Take photos of the affected areas and document any additional information about the incident to relay to the claims specialist.

Clear the area of furniture and personal items

To assist in the cleanup process, do your best to remove any furniture, electronics, and other belongings to clear the area. If possible, you may begin removing any affected carpeting, fabrics, rugs and upholstered materials to eliminate the spread of mold and increase the overall drying process.

Remove excess water, if possible

Don’t worry – the water mitigation team will handle this part for you. However, if you own a shop vac or similar machine, you can start the cleanup process and begin removing excess water. Minimizing the amount of standing water will lessen the changes of long-term property damage, as well as sanitary issues that are caused by these incidents. Do NOT use a standard vacuum to remove the water.

Dealing with water damage can be stressful, especially when it’s unexpected. Our advice is to stay safe, act quickly, and ultimately rely on an expert team to tackle the full water mitigation and cleanup process.
